CK has left me once again. He has temporarily moved to Toronto, so I drove down with him to help him move.
For lunch, we headed to Mildred's Temple Kitchen, an eco-friendly restaurant that resembled a trendy loft warehouse. We were instantly welcomed by very friendly staff, and our service throughout the meal was excellent.
For appys, CK and I shared the Georgian Bay smoked whitefish fritters with pickled spruce tip rémoulade and celery salad. The fritters were delicious! The whitefish was smoked perfectly, and the pickled spruce tip was neat to try. The spruce tips had a faint spruce tree aroma. Spruce tips are a common wild edible plant in Alaska, and they are rich in vitamin C.
Mildred's whitefish is smoked and sent directly from a native reserve near Georgian Bay.
My main was the chickpea and lentil stew with goat's milk yogourt & parsley root bhaji. The bhaji was served with an excellent sour tamarind sauce. The chickpea and lentil stew tasted very similar to a red lentil dal that I make all the time, but much milder. This is a vegetarian dish that will fill you up quickly.
CK ordered the classic Mildred burger prepared medium rare with Irish cloth cheddar, onion relish, and fries. The burger was cooked very well, and had a nice char grilled flavour.
For dessert, we didn't want anything heavy, so we asked if we could just sample their ice creams. We had a scoop of their tamarind ripple ice cream, and a scoop of their sour cream ice cream. They were both very fresh, and interesting in taste. Out of the two, I preferred the tamarind ice cream. It was like eating rich vanilla ice cream with light swirls of sour tamarind. The sour cream ice cream had a strong sour cream taste, and the after taste is like you just had a big bite of cheesecake.
