Plan Check Opening Downtown Location and Oktoberfest Special, Los Angeles

Plan Check, Los Angeles

I’m not sure if I can claim that Plan Check has the best burger in town but they sure do make a dam* good burger!

Featured in Jonathan Gold’s 101 list this year, Plan Check has 2, soon to be 3, neighborhood locations – one on Sawtelle, Fairfax, and on Oct 20th, one on Wilshire. The new location is going to do something a little different by featuring a special Korean BBQ burger made with grilled pork belly and “kimcheese”.

Overall, the food is good ‘ol American comfort food.  But the traditional menu has a few items that are the chef’s interpretation of regional flavors such as the Smokey Fried Chicken, an ode to Southern cooking, which consists of Jidori fried chicken, smoked milk gravy, yam preserves and spicy pickled okra.

The name Plan Check was influenced by the history and activity near its first location, which was adjacent to the Building and Safety Department. Designers, Architects, and Engineers would go to the Building and Safety department to submit their plans for review for permitting and hence became the inspiration for the restaurant’s permanent name.

The PCB, aka Plan Check Burger, is a really solid burger and is the item that is closest to the restaurants original roots – a perfectly seasoned patty with Americanized Dashi cheese, a slice of ketchup leather, schmaltz onions, pickles, and a crunch bun. They have a great list of craft beers, cocktails and whiskeys to help you wash down the meat and grease.

According to LA Eater, Plan Check at the  Fairfax location will offer Oktoberfest specials through the month of October. Only 15 are served a day and for $15, you can get a pint of Licher beer with a burger and brats mash up special. Don’t delay, the early bird catches the worm.

One of the Best Burgers in Ottawa West - Vera's Burger Shack, Ottawa

Vera Burger

Without fail, summer always brings on the urge for burgers. I'm not a burger expert but CK certainly is. He is always looking out for the best burger, and has pretty much tried every burger joint in Ottawa.

Vera's Burger Shack has been a consistent favorite, and is our first choice in the West end. The flavorful and juicy burgers are made fresh to order, and slightly pink. They are especially fresh because they come straight from The Butchery that shares the same space. If you feel like making the burgers yourself at home, you can choose to buy raw Vera's burgers from The Butchery.

Vera's Burger shack is a Canadian West Coast chain that originally started as a beach concession, in the late 70's, in West Van. It has since expanded to over 10 locations in the Vancouver area, and 1 in Ottawa (lucky us).

We always go for the Vera beef burger, but other options include turkey burger, chicken breast fillet, hot dog and turkey hot dog.

The Pharmacy Burger Parlor and Beer Garden, Nashville

Pharmacy Burger, Nashville

Speaking of keeping the Drug Store Soda Fountain culture alive, The Pharmacy Burger Parlor and Beer Garden in Nashville trys to do just that. An old school burger parlor and beer garden specializing in burgers, wursts, housemade sodas, floats, shakes and craft American & German Beer, The Pharmacy is the brainchild of Holland House's, Terrell Raley and is one of the best burger joints in town.

Their beef burgers are made with 100% organic Tennessee beef, and their wursts are housemade and served with sauerkraut, horseradish and beer mustards. Both are served with a  light fluffy Provence roll that are specially made for the restaurant. If you are not a meat lover, they have veg options such as the falafel or black bean burger.

MOO Gourmet Burgers, Sydney

MOO Gourmet Burgers, Sydney

Sydney is a food haven. There is so much good food in this city, it's sick. I wake up every morning dreaming about what to eat for brekky, lunch, and dinner.

I've been waking up at 3AM every morning because of the jet-lag, and the first thing I do is ask CK what we should eat for lunch and dinner. It is driving him crazy, but luckily for me, he is too nice to tell me to shut the F*** up! We end up having about a 30 minute conversation on my potential meals of the day, and then we go back to sleep. Ahhh, I love being on vacation.

Yesterday, we went on my favourite walk: The Coogee to Bondi Walk. It is a 6 km stretch along five beautiful beaches in Sydney. It is a must when I visit. Take a look at the scenery...amazing ain't it?

After the 6km trek, we stopped in at MOO Gourmet Burgers to re-fuel. MOO is a new burger joint that opened 2 months ago. The owner is the grandson of Mick Adams, Australia's first milk bar owner. The milk bar first opened in the 1930's, and the black and white signature burger at MOO is named after his grandfather's Black and White Milk Bar.

MOO Gourmet burgers is a trendy little spot in a prime location. It is directly across the street from Bondi beach, and CK and I enjoyed our burgers while enjoying our view of the Pacific Ocean.

The menu at MOO is quite extensive. In addition to their certified Australian Angus beef burgers, they also offer veggie, chicken, fish, duck, lamb and pork options.

We grabbed ourselves a bottle of certified MOO water (Sydney tap water), and ordered our lunch at the counter.

To start, CK and I shared a basket of hot chips.

I wanted something sweet, so I ordered a MooTeaser milkshake. This was a milkshake with maltesers, chocolate syrup, ice cream, and malt. The milkshake was amazing, and I felt like I was slurping a chocolate bar. It was definitely worth the $6.50.

My burger was the signature MOO burger: 100% Certified Australian Angus beef, beetroot, egg, pineapple, cheese, mixed leaf lettuce, tomato, & tomato relish served on a light sourdough bun. I asked them to hold off on the bacon and mayo. The burger was delicious. It was spiced really nicely, and the beef was tender and juicy. As soon as you bite into this burger, the egg yolk will run and coat both the burger and your fingers!

CK ordered the Wagyu beef burger. This was a 100% Wagyu beef patty with mixed leaf lettuce, slow roasted tomatoes, home made mayo & tomato relish. This was also served on a light sourdough bun. He enjoyed his burger, but wasn't blown away like I was with mine.

This place rocks, and I'm drooling while writing this post. The food is awesome and so is the view.

Lunch at Allium, Ottawa

Salmon Tartare, Allium

My friend Wals and I ventured over to Westboro for lunch to check out Allium. I've been meaning to come here for a while, but never got the chance until now.

This little bistro has a very upbeat vibe to it. The restaurant is in an old house where the floors echo as you walk across them. While we were there, loud music was playing, not overly loud, but not quiet either. I thought the place had a nice charm to it.

My appy was the salmon tartare with truffle oil, fleur de sel, lime juice, cilantro, and crisps. The salmon was nice and light, and the crisps had a nice truffle aroma to them.

My lunch was the rare white tuna. This was served with sauteed mushrooms, wilted spinach, marinated grapes, and an herb-lemon dressing. The tuna was cooked perfectly, but the mushrooms and spinach were a bit greasy for lunch. However, the marinated grapes combined with the veggies was a nice touch because it helped balance out the greasiness. Although it didn't seem like a lot of food, I was definitely stuffed after my meal.

Wals ordered the Allium burger. The Allium burger was made of organic red angus beef, and the platter was served with a side of fruit and fries. The fries were awesome, and tasted like a refined version of chip wagon fries.

Carney's Restaurant, Los Angeles

Carney's

I couldn't help but be charmed by Carney's Restaurant. Who wouldn't want to eat a burger in a train car on the Sunset strip in LA?

Carney's is a casual family owned fast food restaurant that serves burgers and hot dogs in a 1920's Amtrack passenger car. Their menu is more extensive than that, but people mainly come here for their dogs, burgers, and chili.

Carney's 2

Their hot dogs have won awards, and there's a sign in the restaurant that says they won the title for "best hot dogs in LA 2007".

With all the hype about their hot dogs, I couldn't help but stop in for a quick bite.

I ordered the New Yorker hot dog. A dog with sauerkraut and mustard...no messin' around! Their buns were SUPER soft, and their dogs were juicy with a tight casing. The hot dog tasted good and it was also super cheap...BONUS.

Carney's New Yorker Hot Dog

CK ordered an old fashioned hamburger. He didn't mind it but it definitely didn't fill him up. I was too busy enjoying my hot dog, and never got a chance to try his burger.

If you want good, cheap fast food that is not your usual chain like McDonald's, Carney's is a good bet.

Corvette Diner, San Diego

Corvette Diner

Whether or not you like the food here, this is a FUN place to eat! Corvette Diner is a 50's style diner that will take you back in time. They've got the 50's thing down to a tee. Not only is the restaurant covered with 50's decoration, but the waiters wear their hair greased back, and the waitresses are in poodle skirts with retro hairstyles.

Eating here was like a scene in a movie. EVERYONE was genuinely having fun. The staff was bopping to the old school music, and there was a DJ in a booth taking song requests, announcing birthdays, and playing games with the customers. At one point, the wait staff all got up to do "The Roach Dance" for everyone. All the customers were clapping along, and everyone was smiling. When the Chicken Polka song came on, a train of kids were travelling across the restaurant dancing. It was surreal.

When we were seated, we were greeted by a handful of straws being thrown at us. This made me laugh.

When I saw deep fried spicy pickles on the menu, I HAD to try it. I had never had it before, but always heard good things about it. These pickles were lip smackin good!

Deep Fried Spicy Pickles

When you break through the crispy batter, a scrumptious crunchy, sour pickle coated with a whole lot of spiciness is revealed. This was served with a ranch dipping sauce.

Deep Fried Spicy Pickle Revealed

We couldn't go to a diner and not order shakes. I chose the Elvis shake and CK had the coffee shake. The Elvis shake was banana, peanut butter, and marshmallow all shook up. Every sip had me making a fish face, and I got chunks of peanuts and banana every time.

Elvis Shake and Coffee Shake

My main meal was the buffalo blues burger, which had a spicy buffalo sauce, crumbles of blue cheese, lettuce, tomato & onion. This was ok. I could hardly taste the spicy buffalo sauce, and was a little disappointed by that. Because of the lack of sauce, I found the blue cheese and onion a little too over powering.

Buffalo Blues Burger

CK ordered the HOH BURGER: lettuce, tomato, chipotle sauce, mozzarella cheese, fried onion, and fried jalepeno. He found the burger a little dry, and the meat not flavored enough.

HOH Burger

The ending to our meal was similar to our greeting. Instead of straws being thrown at us, it was Bazooka bubble gum.

Bazooka Joe

The food here is mediocre. However, I do recommend that you check out this place for its entertainment value. This is also a super kid-friendly place.

Mildred's Temple Kitchen, Toronto

CK has left me once again. He has temporarily moved to Toronto, so I drove down with him to help him move.

For lunch, we headed to Mildred's Temple Kitchen, an eco-friendly restaurant that resembled a trendy loft warehouse. We were instantly welcomed by very friendly staff, and our service throughout the meal was excellent.

For appys, CK and I shared the Georgian Bay smoked whitefish fritters with pickled spruce tip rémoulade and celery salad. The fritters were delicious! The whitefish was smoked perfectly, and the pickled spruce tip was neat to try. The spruce tips had a faint spruce tree aroma. Spruce tips are a common wild edible plant in Alaska, and they are rich in vitamin C.

Mildred's whitefish is smoked and sent directly from a native reserve near Georgian Bay.

My main was the chickpea and lentil stew with goat's milk yogourt & parsley root bhaji. The bhaji was served with an excellent sour tamarind sauce. The chickpea and lentil stew tasted very similar to a red lentil dal that I make all the time, but much milder. This is a vegetarian dish that will fill you up quickly.

CK ordered the classic Mildred burger prepared medium rare with Irish cloth cheddar, onion relish, and fries. The burger was cooked very well, and had a nice char grilled flavour.

For dessert, we didn't want anything heavy, so we asked if we could just sample their ice creams. We had a scoop of their tamarind ripple ice cream, and a scoop of their sour cream ice cream. They were both very fresh, and interesting in taste. Out of the two, I preferred the tamarind ice cream. It was like eating rich vanilla ice cream with light swirls of sour tamarind. The sour cream ice cream had a strong sour cream taste, and the after taste is like you just had a big bite of cheesecake.
