Thai Airways Airline Food - Sydney to Bangkok

Noodles with Prawns and Black Bean Sauce

Because airline meals are so hard to come by these days, it is more the reason to post airline meals...JUUUUST in case they ever go obsolete. What's neat is how airline food differs so much between country to country, and airline to airline, depending on where you are going and who is operating the flight.

Here are the meals served on a Thai Airways Sydney to Bangkok flight in Economy class. Here, you can see a blend of Asian elements with Australian ones.

Chicken in Red Curry
Lunch

Lunch
Starter: Potato salad with mayonnaise, lettuce, shaved turkey and cherry tomato
Main: Chicken in red curry with bamboo shoot, steamed Thai Hom Mali rice, and stir fried vegetables
Dessert: Orange almond cake
Sides: bread roll, Arnott's crackers, Cracker Barrel cheese, butter, tea, coffee

The curry didn't look like much in the photo, but it was really flavorful! The Arnott's crackers were a nice touch.

Noodles in Black Bean Sauce
Dinner

Dinner
Starter: Fresh fruit salad
Main: Stir fried prawn with black bean sauce, rice noodles, choy sum
Dessert: Wattle seed cookies

The noodles were not soggy and the prawns were huge. This dish was really good and the sliced chile peppers on top gave the dish an extra kick.

Air New Zealand Lounge, Sydney

Air New Zealand Lounge

Of all the airport lounges we've set foot in, one of the most memorable is Air New Zealand's lounge in Sydney. The overall lounge had a very nice clean design and they really made an effort to serve more than the traditional sandwiches, soup, salads and snacks that you see in the lounges.

The food in Air New Zealand's lounge stands out among the rest, and this is comparing it to North American lounges, European lounges and Asian ones as well. Their presentation was nice and they put an effort into serving warm dishes over and above the typical sandwiches, soup and easy to serve items.

There were two things that stood out - the presentation of the food and the hot meals served. In addition to the typical food you would find at an airline lounge, they also had two hot meals served in little chinese lunch take-out boxes. They had a beef bourguignon with garlic mash, and a tuna and vegetable pasta bake the day I was there. Both were really good.

Suminoya All You Can Eat Japanese BBQ, Sydney

Suminoya Buffet

It's not everyday that an all you can eat restaurant is worth mentioning, but Suminoya Japanese BBQ is. Situated in the heart of the business district in Martin Place, Suminoya specializes in authentic Japanese charcoal BBQ with superb quality food.

Although they do have dinner a la carte, the all you can eat buffet dinner is what is popular here. The buffet service is 90 minutes long and starts as soon as you place your first order. Everyone at the table must have the same buffet meal to keep it simple. Becareful of ordering too much because you can get charged for leftover food. There are 2 types of buffet: the gourmet is $45 and the premium is $55. The premium meal is the gourmet option + premium options like sashimi plates, Wagyu beef loin, Shabu Shabu style pork loin, garlic prawns, beef fillets, and unlimited beef tongue.

Get Your Daily Dose of Art and Coffee at Gallery Cafe, Sydney

Gallery Cafe, Sydney

There are countless places to have brekky in Sydney. It all depends on what you are looking for. If you want more of a local community grassroots feel with large portions, then Gallery Cafe is the way to go. What makes this space neat is the colorful artwork that infests the warehouse-like walls. The 2-level cafe can display over 80 pieces of art at any given time. You can spend as much time in an art gallery as you would at this cafe.

Their french toast with bacon & maple syrup is a good choice, with layers of sweet and salty sprinkled with a generous amount of icing sugar. Their chorizo dishes are also a great choice like their Spanish omelette topped with spicy tomato coulis or creamy chorizo scrambled eggs.

Silken Tofu with Pork Floss and Century Egg

Silken Tofu with Pork Floss and Century Egg

Yes, I am posting this dish for the 'fear factor'. It's likely going to gross most of you out, and that's ok! That's probably the normal reaction.

This is a cold dish of silken tofu and century egg, aka preserved duck egg. The color of the egg comes from the the clay and ash that it is preserved in. The tofu is topped with pork floss, and the dish is served in a pool of dark soy sauce.

Do I recommend this dish to the general public? No. Do I dare you to try it? You bet.

Although I like this dish, I don't recommend it because it truly is an acquired taste situation. You really have to love each component of this dish to truly appreciate it. The most bizarre parts of this dish are probably the texture of the pork floss, and that black, rotten looking egg, whose name implies that it has been sitting around for 100 years!

You can find this dish at Din Tai Fung, an awesome dumpling restaurant scattered across Asia and Australia.

Aroma Festival, Sydney

The Rocks Aroma Festival
Next Sunday is Aroma festival in Sydney! An outdoor festival, in The Rocks, dedicated to coffee, tea & chocolate. What can be better? This is an event where vendors from all over Sydney come together to showcase and serve their finest drinks, chocolate, and spices.
As cool as that sounds, this event is so much more than that. It's not just about coffee, tea, and chocolate. There's also food, mulled wine, entertainment, outdoor markets, and much more...
Ummm...like camel rides for example :) How random, right!? These camels were just hangin out in the crowds like it was no big deal. I was shocked that they didn't freak out with so many people around.
Camel Ride
Last year, my good friend Super J, her new boyfriend, and I explored Aroma Fest together...eating and drinking as much as we possibly could.
Meet Super J's boyfriend! LOL. He is such a good sport. I can't believe he said yes when I told him to try on a mask.

So this is how it goes down at Aroma Fest:
Grab some grub and fill your tummy.
Sauteed Shrimp
Fight through the crowds and grab a cup of coffee for cheap.

Eat some more.
Fried Calamari
Quench your thirst with another cup of coffee. Let's do organic this time.

But wait, you'll need to fight through the crowds and long line ups first.

More food to go with that coffee. These Turkish gozlemes were insanely good. You squeeze fresh lemon juice over top while they're still hot, and you've got heaven on a plate! Gozlemes were a discovery I made while in Sydney.

Keep the cycle going until you are completely stuffed from the food and wired from all the caffeine. When you're ready to call it quits, unwind and complete the day by headin to a pub! :)

Atom Thai Restaurant, Sydney

Atom Thai, Sydney

I have an obsessive personality. I'm all about extremes. I either love it or I hate it. I either do it big, or don't do it at all. It is the same with food: if I love something, I will eat it everyday until I'm sick of it. There's just no in between for me.

I WAS obsessed with Thai food when I lived in Sydney. I came to Sydney indifferent to Thai food, and I left craving it every day. Every meal. Sydney has a reputation for cooking up amazing Thai food, with flavors and freshness that cannot be compared to any other place in the world...even Thailand! This resto review is an example of what I am talking about.

When I decided to move back to Ottawa, I dined at a different Thai restaurant everyday for the last few weeks, knowing that I would miss it dearly. Atom Thai was one of my last Thai meals with my friends.

We started our meal with the miang goong. This is the restaurant's signature dish and understandably so. A simple dish of cold prawns, special chili sauce, fresh lemon, cashew nut, betel leaves, and roasted coconut. It was insanely flavorful and fresh...I could have eaten an entire meal of these things.

Our next dish was the stir fried crispy soft shell crab served with hot chili basil sauce, fresh chili, onion, garlic, green bean, and fresh basil leaves.

The kai pad phet was chicken breast stir fried with fresh chili, lemongrass, Thai marble eggplant, kaffir lime leaves, and onion.

The next dish was the crispy barramundi with Thai celery: crispy fried barramundi fillet, celery, salty bean, fresh chili and ginger.

The chili basil noodle was my choice. I just can't go without ordering a flat rice noodle dish for some reason. This noodle dish was stir fried with Thai hot basil, bamboo shoot, and fresh chili. It was very saucy.

All the food was very good. Fresh ingredients. What really stood out was the miang goong. I recommend that dish for sure.

I also ordered a Thai coffee with milk to go with my meal. Sadly, I didn't enjoy this drink. Way way too sweet for me.

Bloodwood, Sydney

Bloodwood, Sydney

Bloodwood in Sydney is awesome for so many different reasons.

First off, the location is great. It is an unpretentious, little neighborhood joint at the end of Newtown, a young and funky suburb.

Second, the chefs are great at what they do. Chefs Claire van Vuuren, Jo Ward, and Mitchell Grady came from a world of fine dining, so they know exactly how it should be done. Great food, great service, but without the fuss of a fine dining restaurant.

Lastly, this is where I met my good friend A. We met briefly in Newcastle through a mutual friend on a road trip I took, and we decided to meet the next time she was in town. A and I immediately connected, and as it turns out, she was key in getting me through some tough times months later. I'll always love her for it.

The two of us shared a small but filling lunch.

The first was the salt cod brandade: a salted cod and olive oil mixture, smothered over fresh bread and served with ox heart tomato salad, and Pedri Ximenez vinegar. The brandade was delicious...not an overwhelming fish taste but enough to really know that it is the main ingredient. Drooling just thinking about it.

The second dish was the socca: a chickpea pancake with zucchini, pumpkin, Persian fetta, and herbs. The pancake was seasoned with a perfect blend of spices, the ingredients were fresh, and it was filling!

A and I were in the mood for dessert, but the one we ordered had run out for the day. Bloodwood has a small menu, and we just couldn't find another dessert that tickled our fancy.
This is a great place for a casual meet up and fantastic food.

Danks Street Depot, Sydney

Danks Street Depot, Sydney

Just celebrated my first Anzac Day, Australia's equivalent to Remembrance day. A bunch of us got together for BBQ, ate excessive amounts of food, and then headed to the pubs to play two-up.
Two-up is a coin toss game that is traditionally played across Aussie pubs on Anzac day. The concept is dead simple, but the game itself is heaps of fun. Two coins are tossed, and you place your bet on either heads or tails. The cool part is that you have to find someone in the crowd to bet with. For example, if you want to place $20 on heads, you have to find someone in the crowd who is willing to place $20 on tails.

Everyone is screaming and yelling with anticipation, and you end up making friends with strangers in the process because of the interactive nature of the game. Like I said, heaps of fun. The pic below was taken just as the coin was tossed...as you can see, everyone is crowding around to see if they've made any money.

Anzac Day
Playing Two-up on Anzac Day

The best way to recover from an eventful Anzac Day is to head out for a late brunch the day after. We decided to meet up at Danks Street Depot.

Started by Jared Ingersoll and Melanie Starr, Danks Street Depot is a place that truly places value on eating local, and supporting farmers who use sustainable farming practices. They have even implemented an "All Australian" policy across their menu.

Danks Street Depot recently started a composting process where they have harvested enough soil to grow cool herbs such as stevia and lilly pilly. Their goal is for it to grow large enough to support the restaurant one day.

As soon as we sat down, we all ordered coffee to give us a jolt.

As for lunch, my friend Rinaldo and I both ordered the Cock-a-Leekie. A warm, hearty dish of biodynamic Cornucopia beef and organic chicken poached in a chicken broth with leek and barley. The dish was finished with some cooked prunes on top.

I loved the addition of the prunes. My mother-in-law often cooks prune with meat, and it is something I have learned to love. I squished the prunes into my leek and barley sauce, and enjoyed the sweet/salty combo.

CK ordered the hot beef sandwich: braised beef and caramelized onions on schiacatta (Italian flat bread) topped with jus and served with crispy salt & vinegar chat potatoes. His sandwich was very nice.

JM ordered the Moroccan pie. This was a delicious stew of pure bred Suffolk roasted lamb, potatoes, chickpeas and raisins, topped with a super flaky butter puff pastry. This was delicious and was perfect for the occasion.

I couldn't help but snap another picture once JM dug into it. We call her Monica Geller because she, like Monica, is an obsessive, neurotic clean freak. Of course, while I was taking this photo, JM kept saying that she would have eaten her pie in a much cleaner way had she known I was going to take a photo. Silly girl.
