Shab-e Yaldā, Longest Night Of The Year

Tonight was shab-e yaldā, a persian festival that celebrates the longest night of the year. Shab-e yaldā is always celebrated on the eve of the winter solstice, which is also the eve of the birth of Mitra, the Sun Godess. Mitra symbolises light, goodness and strength on earth. In Iran, babies who were born on this day were generally named Mitra.

CK's family celebrates shab-e yaldā by serving fruits (particularly watermelon and pomegranate for its red color) and nuts. Families get together to celebrate by eating, and staying up late.

This website will provide more insight into the history and significance of shab-e yaldā.
