While in San Diego last week, I met up with my friend Lisa, who took me out for lunch at Urban Solace in North Park.
I first met Lisa at the Little Italy Mercato Market back in February, and we have kept in touch ever since. She is a very talented woman who is soon opening her own organic gourmet popsicle shop in Normal Heights. I'm very excited to share the details of her new store in my next post.
Urban Solace was recently voted "Best of the Best" by the readers of San Diego Magazine, and "Best American Food" by the critics of San Diego Magazine. In 2008, they were voted ‘Best New Restaurant’ and ‘Best Sunday Brunch’ by the same publication. Urban Solace serves American comfort food that is both classic and cutting edge.
For lunch, I ordered the grilled albacore tuna sandwich. This was rare tuna on a grilled egg bun with arugula, tomato, lemon thyme aioli, and grilled onions. It was cooked perfectly, and tasted great. A side of rockin' sweet potato fries was served with the sandwich. I highly recommend this dish.

I didn't just stop at the sandwich, I also ordered a side of duckaroni. This was a rich mac n' cheese dish with duck confit, blue cheese, arugula, scallions, and roasted garlic.

Lisa ordered the grilled four cheese sandwich with a creamy tomato-fennel soup. I had a taste of the soup, and was blown away. It was full of flavor and I had major soup envy. This dish was also served with a side of sweet potato fries.

We sat outside on the terrace, and enjoyed our meals in the warm sunny San Diego weather.

Yum! Duckaroni!! There is a great restaurant in Boston that has several types of mac and cheese, but I have yet to see a duck version on the menu. Usually the standard "exotic mac and cheese" here in New England is Lobster Mac and Cheese. Did you know that in the US, "Kraft Dinner" is called "Kraft Macaroni and Cheese". Yet another cross-border difference that gives me away. That and when I talk about wearing my toque in the winter!
Yum! Lobster mac and cheese. That sounds awesome.
I love hearing about cross-border differences. We're so close yet can be so different.
I still haven't tried the bacon bar by the way. My sis wanted to try it too so I brought it back to Ottawa with me. It's been hard to find a time where we both are in the mood for chocolate.
For a super nerd-tastic documentary on cross-border differences, check out the CBC documentary called "Talking Canadian". They show it once in a while on TV, but I saw half and then decided that I must own the DVD since my husband is American and I am Canadian, it helped sort out some of our linguistic differences!
I hope you're in the mood for chocolate soon! Or at least bacon! I'm usually in the mood for chocolate everyday around 2 pm, but then again, I have a chocolate fund jar on my desk at work for co-workers to contribute to our stash of chocolates that we hide under the fax machine! Shhhhhh!!
