We are finally back in Sydney, and wow, what a change from the last 10 days! It basically switched from nature and wildlife to busy bustling city in the snap of a finger.
I couldn’t leave Sydney without dining at Quay. Overlooking the Sydney harbour bridge and opera house, Quay was voted by Australian Gourmet Traveller and SMH Good Food guide as the best restaurant of the year for 2009. The service here was excellent and the view was beautiful and serene.
For our first course, we had the sea pearls and the slow cooked quail breast.
The sea pearls was a beautiful dish of sashimi tuna, smoked eel, octopus, egg white pearls, sea scallop, and tapioca. Besides the sashimi tuna, I am not 100% what went into each ball. CK had this dish, and I didn't bother asking him the exact details. No, that is not tin foil on the right, it is an edible silver leaf.
The quail breast was prepared medium rare and was cooked perfectly. This was a really rich dish that included Joselito Iberico Jamon de bellota, hazelnuts, chinese artichokes, chestnut mushrooms, black pudding, and milk skin. There was a lot going on in this dish and the richness filled my stomach up quickly.
My second course was a very tender roasted veal fillet. It was served with grains and a truffle custard that tasted amazing together.
CK had the slow braised South Australian milk fed lamb shoulder. This was paired with roasted globe artichokes and fresh milk curd.
We ended our meal with a green apple snow egg. The inside of the egg was an apple meringue and the outside was a caramelized sugar coating. The apple flavoured shaved ice was a little sweet for me. I would have liked it to be a bit more refreshing with the warm weather but CK thought it was perfect.
All in all, I thought the food was amazing, and I would definitely go back. If Bunker didn't burn a hole through my wallet, Quay definitely did.
